But\nwhat if you\u2019re hooked on it? It takes a few days for the shade to settle in, so after about two weeks of whitening, you should wait a few days before continuing whitening. But can you continue whiten your teeth continuously for months?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happens If\nYou Overuse Teeth Whitening?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Excessive whitening can damage teeth, their roots, and your\ngums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Teeth<\/strong> \u2013 Tooth enamel can wear away. If that happens, you\u2019ll      lose your brilliantly white smile and your teeth will look gray or blue      instead. Your teeth can also become sensitive to heat or cold foods and      beverages.<\/li><li><strong>Gums<\/strong> \u2013 The gum tissue around your teeth can be burned by the      chemicals in the gel or get irritated. Inflamed gum tissue leads to      periodontal disease, which can cause damage your gums and teeth. In severe      cases, <a href=\"https:\/\/delaunedental.com\/new-orleans-soft-tissue-grafting.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">soft-tissue      grafting might be required<\/a>.<\/li><li><strong>Roots<\/strong> \u2013 As your gums get irritated and recede, your tooth      roots will be exposed. If you continue whitening, you\u2019ll also feel      sensitivity in your roots.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Take a Break<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Whitening might not be the right treatment<\/strong> &#8211; Did you realize\n     that bleaching your teeth isn\u2019t always the best solution for removing\n     stains or making them whiter? Speak with your dentist before you begin\n     whitening them. If your gums or teeth are not healthy\u2014or if you have\n     cavities developing\u2014those issues should be treated first.<\/li><li><strong>Pause between treatment<\/strong> &#8211; After you whiten your teeth for two\n     weeks, take a break and let the color settle. If you want to continue\n     whitening, only do it for a week longer. Touch-ups are only needed every\n     few months.<\/li><li><strong>Whitening gel <\/strong>&#8211; Only use FDA-approved gel.
