Many people are thinking about improving their smile with teeth whitening, bonding, veneers or crowns but aren’t sure how to find the right cosmetic dentist to fit their dental needs. We’ve complied some of the essential things to look for when choosing a cosmetic dentist.
Check to make sure that the cosmetic dentist has an American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) accreditation level. The AACD mission states that they are “dedicated to advancing excellence in the art and science of comprehensive cosmetic dentistry and encouraging the highest standards of ethical conduct and responsible patient care.” They provide courses for the continuing education of cosmetic dentists and provide up to date information about the profession to dentists and the public.
A cosmetic dentist with any AACD accreditation level represents that the dentist is serious about offering the highest quality service and cares about your well being and satisfaction, above all else.

Along with an AACD accreditation, a cosmetic dentist (or any dentist for that matter) should always be continuing their education. Many states have requirements on the amount of hours per year that a dentist needs to spend on continuing education, so check to make sure that the cosmetic dentist you are thinking about is up to date and on track to meet their yearly requirement.
It’s also important to make sure that the dentist you’re thinking about has advanced training in cosmetic dentistry specifically. If they are AACD accredited, they most likely have up to date advanced training but there’s no harm in asking.
A great cosmetic dentist will give you a consultation before any extensive work is done on your teeth. This is a great time to ask questions while you and your dentist discusses the work to be done. A consultation will help you and your dentist feel more comfortable about the desired end result.
Ask the cosmetic dentist about his or her previous work. Good questions to keep in mind would be how many times have they done the procedure in question and are there any before and after photos to review. An experienced cosmetic dentist will have a myriad of examples to present.
Dental Lab that Makes Veneers
In the end, a cosmetic dentist is only as good as the dental lab with which they are associated. If a cosmetic dentist gets veneers from a great dental lab, combined with his or her great dental service, the end result will prove to be amazing. Conversely, even if the cosmetic dentist’s work is unmatched , if the veneers are of low quality the end result will not be superb.
Ask your dentist to recommend a cosmetic dentist. Dentists often are familiar with each other’s work in a local community and will be able to steer you in the right direction. Also, ask for testimonials from your cosmetic dentist. If reviews are positive overall, the dental lab that is used is probably great.
I hope this helps you in your search for a cosmetic dentist. For those of you who have already found a cosmetic dentist and have had work done, what other things did you look for? Comment below.
