My teeth still look stained — even after Zoom whitening

I was so excited to get Zoom whitening, but it’s been two days since I had the procedure and I am kind of disappointed. I guess I had much higher expectations, but overall, I feel like my teeth still look brownish and I was expecting a bright, white smile. Did my dentist do something wrong, or is there a limit to how white Zoom can make my teeth?  — Alyssa in Memphis

Zoom whitening usually produces very rapid, drastic results — so much so that it’s often used on the many of the television makeover shows.

Because it’s so powerful, your dentist has to be careful that you are not getting too much at one time to minimize sensitivity. My friend says Zoom whitening really hurts!

I am thinking about getting my teeth whitened. I wanted in done in the office because it’s faster, but I have a friend that just got Zoom. She said that everything was okay right after the whitening session, but when she got home it felt like someone was sticking each tooth in an electric socket. She said the zinging sensation hurt really bad. That’s not what I was expecting. Does Zoom really hurt that bad? – Leslie

Leslie – If you choose Zoom whitening, find an experienced cosmetic dentist to do it. If your teeth are generally sensitive your dentist will anticipate any extra sensitivity you might experience. At times, it is necessary to shorten the usual three 15-minute Zoom sessions or allow time between sessions.

After the procedure, a fluoride-based desensitizer is used to protect the enamel of your teeth and reduce any sensitivity you might feel. If you experience more sensitivity than expected, you can take over-the-counter pain reliever.

Will Zoom teeth whitening lighten up my dental bonding?

Hello. My dental bonding is getting dark. Bonding was put on my front teeth about 12 years ago and I am wondering if Zoom teeth whitening will lighten it up. I know that bonding wears with time, but right now I cannot afford new bonding. Will Zoom help? Thanks – Collette, Metairie

Neither Zoom whitening nor any other teeth bleaching system will whiten your dental bonding. But it will whiten your natural teeth, and make your darker bonding even more noticeable. That’s not the desired result.

Depending on the cause of the discoloration of the bonding, it can be polished to look better. If the stains are external—not within the bonding material—an expert cosmetic dentist might be able to improve the look of the bonding by polishing it.

Otherwise, new dental bonding is needed. If replacing the bonding is not within your budget at this time, it’s best to wait until you can afford to have an expert cosmetic dentist do the work. You’ll have a beautiful result that looks natural. It will be worth the wait.
