Lumineers over Crowns

I have old dental crowns that look horrible. I’d like to get veneers and am told that the Lumineers brand can go over dental crowns. Would I be a candidate for this? How do I go about finding a dentist to do it?

Above you will see an advertisement Lumineers placed years ago marketing this very concept. While I am certain you will be able to find a dentist to do this for you, what I’d like you to do is go over the information I’m about to provide and ask yourself if that’s what you want. First, let’s talk a little bit about Lumineers. They are simply one brand of porcelain veneers. This particular brand happens to be highly marketed to inexperienced cosmetic dentists. As a result, those are usually the type of dentists you will find that place them.

Dentists with expertise in cosmetic dentistry almost always prefer other brands. This has more to do with the fact that the company that owns Lumineers, DenMat, requires dentists to use their lab, which is not known for its artistic results. When it comes to getting a beautiful smile, you are better served by finding an expert cosmetic dentist and letting them choose the best brand to give you the results you want.

Should You Put Veneers Over Crowns?

Problem One:

Placing veneers over crowns is going to be bulky looking. If you consider that many patients find Lumineers themselves too bulky, you may find yourself feeling like you have horse teeth.

Problem Two:

There will be bonding issues. It is much more secure when you bond porcelain to natural tooth structure than it is when you bond porcelain to porcelain. This means you are at a greater risk of bonding failure. Additionally, your crowns are getting old. What if the bonding for those fails? Now you have double the risk of bonding failure– One from your old crowns and another from the porcelain veneers being bonded onto the crowns.

The Solution to Old Ugly Dental Crowns

The best thing for you to do is simply replace the crowns you have. An artistic cosmetic dentist can give you a gorgeous smile with dental crowns just as easily as with porcelain veneers. What Else is Necessary with Porcelain Veneers?

I want to get porcelain veneers. My dentist is fine with that but said he wants me to get my teeth whitened first and my crooked front tooth straightened with Invisalign. I thought that porcelain veneers made your teeth whiter and could make a crooked tooth look straight. What else is really necessary with porcelain veneers?

Dear Kelly,

I can give you some guidelines here, but bear in mind that I have not examined you so it would be irresponsible to give specifics. In principle, you are right, porcelain veneers can change the shape, size, and color of your teeth. If that is the case, why would you need anything else?

Let’s start with the teeth whitening. Most dentists will suggest you whiten at least your bottom arch of teeth. Patients generally only get veneers on their upper teeth, so if you want your two arches to blend, whitening the bottom teeth is an inexpensive way to do that. You would only need to whiten the upper arch of your teeth if you were not getting enough porcelain veneers to cover the teeth that are exposed when you smile. Most people have a smile that is 8-10 teeth wide. Let’s say you were getting just six porcelain veneers. Then, the adjacent teeth would not match when you smiled. Whitening them will help them to blend.

The Invisalign is a whole different story. It is rare for a patient to need orthodontics and porcelain veneers. You mentioned you had a crooked front tooth. An experienced cosmetic dentist can make crooked teeth look straight with porcelain veneers. The exception to that would be if you had a pretty complicated orthodontic case. That doesn’t sound like you at all.

This gives me a clue to your dentist. It is quite possible your dentist is using Invisalign like a crutch. He doesn’t feel comfortable shaping crooked teeth with porcelain veneers so he only wants to work with the ideal cases. If it isn’t ideal he suggests other procedures until it is. This is a waste of your money and time.

I suggest you get the teeth whitening with him. It is inexpensive and useful. Then, get the porcelain veneers with an expert cosmetic dentist. I recommend looking on the mynewsmile.com website. My Lumineers Do Not Look Right

I had porcelain veneers done almost 20 years ago. I loved them but it was time to get them replaced as they had started to show their age. My old dentist had retired and I used his replacement. I wish I had not now. It has been a completely different experience. First, even though I told him I wanted them to match my last porcelain veneers exactly, he made some changes. He used a different brand of porcelain veneers he called Lumineers because he said they were thinner and he was placing these over my old veneers. That sounded okay to me. But, then he also put a strain on the Lumineers, which he did not mention ahead of time. When they came in I told him I wanted whiter and he said to give it a couple of days and see what I think then. He felt they looked more “natural” this way. I did and still didn’t like them. He told me to come in and he would “fix” it, if that is what you would call it. His fix was to sand off the front which had the staining. Now I am left with this dull underneath. What do I do?

There are a couple of problems going on here. First, the fact that he put Lumineers over old porcelain veneers is a problem. Porcelain sticks much better to natural tooth structure than to other porcelain. Now not only will you have to worry about the bonding of your new veneers failing, but your old veneers are eventually going to wear down as well and he attached the new ones to them. It is just as much work to place new over old as it is to just do them over. It doesn’t make sense that he did it the other way.

I’m not surprised he placed a stain on them to “make them look natural,” nor that he told you to give it a few days and you would get used to it. What he really meant by that is he didn’t want to do this over and he was counting on you to give up. Most patients don’t have your courage to stand up for themselves. A true cosmetic dentist would not bond on your porcelain veneers until trying them on with a temporary try-in paste and then letting you see and approve them. If you weren’t happy with the color he would never ask you to give it some time, but rather would send them straight back to the lab to be re-done.

He never did this. He may not even have the experience to know about a temporary try-in paste. When he suggested Lumineers, I knew you probably were not getting a highly skilled cosmetic dentist. Cosmetic dentistry isn’t a recognized specialty. Any dentist can try the procedures regardless of their skill level. This particular brand of porcelain veneers is marketed to inexperienced cosmetic dentists as being easy to place.

Under normal circumstances, you would have no recourse. The standard of care in dentistry is functional. They don’t have to be beautiful, even for cosmetic work. However, once he ground down your Lumineers, they were no longer functional. He removed the glazing on them which is what protects them. Because of that, you have the right to ask for a refund.

Once that is secured, you can use that money and go to a true cosmetic dentist to have these re-done. Look for a dentist listed on the mynewsmile.com website. Each of those dentists are pre-screened for both their technical knowledge and artistry. They can not pay to be listed. Instead, they have to be skilled cosmetic dentists.

Tetracycline Teeth and No Money

I have tetracycline stains on my teeth. I had dental bonding placed on my teeth but they are old and chipping. I can’t afford the porcelain veneers my dentist thinks I should get. Is there a whitening option that will work for me? Or if there are ways to get porcelain veneers cheaper than my dentist offers them can you give me that tip? My dentist is one of those top cosmetic dentists so I know he is more expensive than most.

I will answer your second question first. If you cannot afford to get porcelain veneers from a skilled porcelain veneers, please don’t go to a cheaper dentist. I can tell you countless horror stories of smile makeover disasters from patients who tried to save money by going to a cheap cosmetic dentist. This is especially true in your case because tetracycline stains are one of the most advanced types of cosmetic cases there are. If you cannot afford to have it done right you have a few options.

If your dentist placed the dental bonding over your dental enamel, you should be able to have your dentist remove the bonding with sandpaper disks. In some states, a dental hygienist can do this for you at a lower fee. Once the dental bonding is off, you can whiten your teeth. If you are persistant enough and stay at it long enough it can make a difference. It will not be a great as porcelain veneers but it will make a difference. Don’t use anything over the counter. They are not strong enough and it will be a profound waste of money. In that same vein, don’t use anything like laser whitening or Zoom whitening. Yes, they are stronger than the take home teeth whitening, but they are more expensive. You are trying to save money and it would take way too many sessions to make a difference.

On the other hand, if your dentist did remove some of the enamel on your teeth, the best you can do at this point is have someone smooth out the dental bonding while you save to get porcelain veneers done by a skilled cosmetic dentist.

Getting Super White Teeth

I want super, super white teeth. My dentist said I won’t be happy with that because it won’t look natural. I don’t feel like I am going to get all my options from him. He’s a super nice guy and your basic bread and butter dentist, but for this I may need someone else. Can you tell me what my options are so I can start doing some research on dentists who do those procedures?

First, I will say you are wise to discern that you may need to see someone else for the types of procedure you are looking for. Too many patients think any dentist can do any procedure and that just isn’t true. You can have a great family dentist, but he or she could still be clueless as to cosmetic work. That’s not taught in dental school, nor is it a recognized specialty. That means it is totally up to the dentist how much post-doctoral training he invests in, if any. There are countless cosmetic dentist horror stories from patients who pressured an unqualified dentist. Fortunately, this should not happen to you.

You have a few options here.

If you are looking to do more than just whiten your teeth, such as changing other aspects of your teeth, then you may want to look into porcelain veneers. Finding a Cosmetic Dentist on Yelp!?

I have chipped a few of my teeth due to teeth grinding. I’m going to get a smile makeover and am thinking of dental bonding because they’re likely less expensive than porcelain veneers. I am aware they take an expert cosmetic dentist. I’ve been going through Yelp! and found two in my area with very high ratings. Is there something else I should be looking for to help me choose between the two?

It is great that you are trying to do research for you cosmetic dentist but I don’t think Yelp! is the way to go for this particular thing. It is a great resource for finding a decent dentist, but based on the research I’ve done, it doesn’t appear their algorithm judges based on the types of procedures. So they may have a lot of high ratings, but it has nothing to do with their ability to do beautiful cosmetic work. Those high rankings could be simply because they are a friendly office.

Before we go into a better way to find a great cosmetic dentist, though, I want to go over your procedure. You said you wanted a smile makeover which I’m assuming you mean to cover the tooth the way porcelain veneers would. Dental Bonding is much better for small amounts of work, like fixing a chipped tooth (as the images above show).

If you’re looking to cover the tooth the way porcelain veneers do, you will find that it will end up costing you more. Dental bonding is done freehand, which would take forever over larger surfaces. In fact, very few dentists will even do it. So depending on what you’re going for, you may want porcelain veneers.

Whichever procedure you choose, you will need to get a nightguard. This will protect your new dental work from the grinding you do at night. Without that, it will damage your veneers or bonding just like it did your natural teeth.

Choosing Your Cosmetic Dentist

There isn’t a recognized specialty in cosmetic dentistry. That makes it hard for patients to know who is good and who isn’t. One way to help with this is to go to the mynewsmile.com website. Dealing with Teeth Whitening

I developed these opaque white spots on my teeth when I was much younger. My dentist insists my teeth are completely healthy. I mentioned to him that the appearance really bothers me, but he is more of the philosophy if it isn’t broke don’t mess with it. When I brought it up a few more times he said if it bothers me that much I could get some whitening strips. I’m looking for something a little faster and professional. There is a dentist in my area who does Zoom Whitening. Is it okay to go to a different dentist just for some cosmetic work or is that considered bad form?

So, there are a few different types of dentists. Yours sounds like he holds to the engineering mindset These are dentists who got into the field because they like to fix things. They haven’t invested any time in learning the cosmetic side of their field. This is very obvious from the advice he gave you.

While you are correct that Zoom Whitening is the most effective and quick way to get your teeth whitened, it will not work for your particular issue.

Any type of teeth whitening, professional or not, will whiten your teeth uniformly. This means there will still be color differences in your teeth with white spots.

The Solution to White Spots

Depending on the area affected, you have a couple of choices. If it is a tiny area of white spots, you could have dental bonding done to get your teeth uniform in color.

If it is a large area, you would be better served getting porcelain veneers placed. These will cover the entire tooth and are the top of the line in smile makeover options.

matching teeth to eyeballs?

I wanted to know if it is possible to use teeth whitening to match my teeth to my eyeballs?

I want to give you points for the most unique question I have received. There are two factors in answering this question.

First, a lot of the answers will depend on one how white your eyeballs are. While teeth can be bleached exceptionally white, there are limits to its whitening ability.

The second factor is that teeth whitening results vary quite a bit. This is why when someone is getting a complete smile makeover we have them bleach their teeth first. You get much more accurate results when you are matching porcelain veneers to a color, than when you are using teeth whitening.

If it is just a color you are going for, then you can attempt to do it with teeth whitening and see if it gives you the color you want. It is the least expensive way to give yourself a mini makeover.

However, if there was more you wanted to change about your teeth, such as their shape or size, in addition to the color, then the way to go is with porcelain veneers.

As I mentioned above, they can be made to any color you desire. But that isn’t all. A great cosmetic dentist can lengthen and widen your teeth, completely changing the character of your smile. Depending on how the dentist shapes your teeth, he can change the appearance of your smile to look youthful, sporty, authoritative…whatever you want.

However, it does require some expertise and will be more expensive. Unlike teeth whitening, which any dentist can do equally well, to do truly beautiful smile makeovers takes advanced technical and artistic ability.

This is only developed after extensive post-doctoral training. Doing smile makeovers isn’t taught in dental school. In your place, I’d look for an AACD accredited dentist. They are in the top 1% of cosmetic dentists in the country. Any smile they create for you will be absolutely stunning.

fixing this dental bonding

I had dental bonding done by my dentist in the previous state I lived in. It was getting old and picking up stains so my new dentist tried to spruce it up with teeth whitening. That seemed to just make it darker. Is there some way to whiten this bonding?

Unfortunately, teeth whitening will not work on your dental bonding. It isn’t just bonding. It won’t work on any dental work. The reason your dental bonding looks darker is the teeth whitening did work on your natural teeth while your bonding stayed the same color.

There is not a way to whiten old bonding. Instead, you’re going to need to have it re-done. I don’t think your current dentist will be the one to do it. He or she didn’t understand how teeth whitening works, which is the bare basics of cosmetic dentistry. Dental bonding takes an expert level of cosmetic skill to get right.

In your place, I’d look for a dentist recommended on the mynewsmile.com website. They pre-screen dentists who wish to be listed for both their technical training and their artistic skill.

One thing you might want to consider is upgrading to porcelain veneers. Your bonding will have to be re-done every few years, When porcelain veneers are well cared for, they can last for two decades. Again, you would need to have this done by a cosmetic dentist.

Brown Spots on TEeth

Most of my teeth are okay, but there are brown spots on my two front teeth which have bothered me since they came in . I was told this was because of a fever I had as a child. My dentist tried all the over the counter whitening products and even professional whitening. She’s thinking about either sending me to another dentist who has a Zoom light or grinding down until the brown spots are gone. Do you think one of these is a better option than another?

I want you to stop letting this dentist work on your front teeth. While it is obvious she is trying to help, she doesn’t have the knowledge for this type of treatment.

Neither at-home whitening or in-office Zoom Whitening will solve your problem. Teeth whitening whitens the teeth evenly. This means your brown spots will just become more obvious.

I certainly don’t think she should experiment by grinding down the brown spots. Does she know how far she’ll have to grind? How will she build the material back up?

Solutions to Brown Spots on Teeth

You have two good solutions to this issue. The first is dental bonding. This uses composite resin which the dentist will hand sculpt onto your teeth to hide the brown spots. This is the least expensive of the two options. However, it doesn’t last as long and will need to be replaced periodically.

Your second option is to have porcelain veneers done. You can do them just on the two front teeth or you can get a complete smile makeover. It’s up to you.

One word of caution. Your current dentist is not qualified to do either of these procedures. I’m going to recommend you pick one of the dentists from your area listed on the mynewsmile.com website. They have the cosmetic training and skill necessary to give you a beautiful result.
